Sayer Ji, Sungchul Ji & Tia Kansara at AUREA: We Already Have Every Technology But One
A biologist's son, an 85-year-old theoretical cell biologist, and a doctor of sustainable design walked onto the AUREA stage. What they landed on was not a technology problem. It was a love problem — and the professor had the equation for it.

Sayer Ji opened by admitting the hubris of what he was about to attempt: to talk about the great mystery, and wrap the whole thing into something simple and felt.
He comes by it honestly. His father, Professor Sungchul Ji, spent forty years at Rutgers trying to build a theory of everything. Sayer is writing a book with the working title Ancient Futures. But the line he offered early on is the one that governs the rest:
"The human heart is capable of comprehending the infinite. The mind is not. But it is a worthwhile thing to try."
The problem with studying life
As a boy he was taken into his father's lab and shown the liver of an animal, still pulsing, while experiments were run on it to understand life.
He uses that memory to name something uncomfortable about biology: that the study of life is, in his word, somewhat necrophilic. You break the living thing into its constituent parts, and by the time you have the parts, life is no longer in the equation. You are left with structure.
Which is why he is so taken with the CymaScope — a device built by John Stuart Reid that makes sound visible on a water-based membrane. Every cell has a sound. Sonify it, put it through the instrument, and you get an image of something while it is still alive. He calls it what the microscope and telescope were in their moment: a new way of seeing.
Reid conceived of it, Sayer says, after lying in the sarcophagus in the King's Chamber of the Great Pyramid and having a healing experience there — a detail that sits oddly close to a line in the Emerald Tablets about lying in that same chamber to preserve knowledge for a return.
The turn: he had never loved himself
Then the talk stops being cosmology and gets personal.
Sayer describes the pattern most people call falling in love: two people whose wounds fit together, each unknowingly marrying some version of their parents, two broken cookies forming what looks like a whole. He went through it more than once.
It took a breakup for the actual diagnosis to land — that he had never loved himself, and that this, not compatibility, is what determines who you are able to call in. He and Tia Kansara, he says, are partners because they share one commitment first: kindness to self.
This is not a detour from the Golden Age argument. It is the argument. His model is that as individuals come into wholeness, the overlap between them forms a mandorla — a portal — and enough of those overlapping circles is what the flower of life actually looks like when it is built out of people instead of drawn on paper.
The professor changes his mind at 85
Then his father took the chair, and gave the best few minutes of the night.
Sungchul Ji came to America in 1962 as an exchange student from Seoul National University. Sixty of his eighty-five years were spent in universities. He retired the previous August believing he had done what he came to do: formulate a theory of everything.
Then he moved to Miami, and it fell apart in the best way.
"Instead of a theory of everything — theories from everything. You may think that only a few people can develop theories of everything. I now believe that every one of us can develop our own theory from our own experience."
He got there through Aristotle: universals cannot exist on their own. They exist only where individuals manifest them. Which freed him — a man who had avoided the word for a lifetime — to finally use the word God, understood as the universal that every particular name is a manifestation of.
And the same structure applies to you. There is Theory, the universal. And there is the theory only your life could produce.
"You have your own life history. You can use it to build a theory of life."
Miami or Mariupol
His second idea is the one he brought from Florida, and he named it after where he found it.
Having spent his life on knowledge, he arrived somewhere warm, among friends and family, and — his words — learned what happiness, love and beauty actually were. At the same time he was reading about Mariupol.
So: the same body of human knowledge, the same rising artificial intelligence, and two possible destinations. Miami, or Mariupol. Which one we get is not a technical question.
Then he offered his reason for optimism, and it is a physicist's reason. At the Big Bang the mathematics says matter and antimatter should have been equal. They were not. There is more matter than antimatter — which is the only reason anything exists at all rather than annihilating.
"To me this is a sign that this universe is productive and filled with love. We are destined to love rather than to hate."
Tia Kansara named the shift out loud, and it is the sentence to take home:
"You've gone from Cogito ergo sum to I love, therefore I am."
The takeaway
Sayer's closing point is the reason this talk belongs to leaders and not only to physicists.
We already have, he argues, essentially every outer technology required to run a civilization cleanly and indefinitely. Energy, materials, food, information. That is not the bottleneck.
The bottleneck is the inner technology — whether enough people have done enough healing to be trusted with what we already know how to build. Which makes the work of loving yourself, and learning to hold another person well, not the soft edge of the movement. It is the load-bearing wall.
